I would have been sixteen here, but girls weren't allowed in Cathedral Choirs in those days. My musical background enabled me to learn how to play a musical instrument as well as sing. I also have perfect pitch - a gift that has been put to good use in a church choir (alto).

Years ago, when many people were Christians, churches could attract talented people to their music programs. I remember some remarkable music at relatively small churches, but that was decades ago.

Oh dear! Rose is 90. This makes me feel so terribly old. When I was a chorister, "Master Rose", as William Mackie, our Master of the Choristers referred to him, was held out as our exemplar. We were told that, "If we worked hard for six years as a chorister, we might possibly qualify to clean his shoes after rugger". 😅

I was the librarian of Tewkesbury Library in the 1970s, and only had to cross the road to be in the Abbey for Choral Evensong. This daily experience of wonderful music in a glorious setting had its impact, and I was ordained in 1981. Some years later our son became a chorister at Winchester Cathedral, where one of the basses behind him had previously been a bass in the Tewkesbury Abbey School Choir at the time of these recordings.

I woke this morning singing Oh for the Wings of a Dove and I came across your wonderful documentary which I will return to again and again. I was trained in school from age 8-12yrs we a choir of 45 won the National choir competition 4 years running. I keep practicing singing (74) every day with my favourite the Ave Verum which I didn’t learn at school but taught myself. My children now are enthralled with how I manage this hymn. Thank you all again for making this documentary it swells my heart .

Roy Massey (who has just celebrated his 90th birthday) writes to me that "there is a recording of a Hymn programme sung by King Edward’s Chapel choir on UA-cam, originally broadcast on local radio towards the end of my time at KES. Paul Vaughan, who masterminded the broadcast tells me that it was recorded in St Alban’s. I was conducting and John Pryer was playing the organ. As the programme proceeded the presenter announced that one of the Basses - Chris Hodges - had been awarded a Bass choral scholarship to New College Oxford and Michael Cockerham an Alto place in the choir of King’s College, Cambridge. Chris sang a few solos in the broadcast. That choir wasn’t at all bad!" John Pryer is still playing at St Chad's and confirms that it was recorded at St Alban the Martyr, Conybere Street, Highgate... where Roy was organist 1954-60... the best acoustic in Birmingham (but, as a boy in that choir, and now Music Secretary at SATM, I would say that!)
